Your tent is your home in the backcountry. A poor choice means miserable nights, soggy sleeping bags, and exhausted mornings. A great choice means waking up dry, rested, and ready to cover miles. Given that a backpacking tent is one of your "big three" gear items — along with your sleep system and pack — it's worth understanding exactly what you need before spending your money.

The Five Key Factors

1. Weight

Every gram counts when it's strapped to your back for days. Backpacking tents are broadly categorized as:

  • Ultralight (<1 kg / 2.2 lbs): Typically tarp-style or single-wall designs. Minimal, fast to pitch, but often compromise on weather protection or livability.
  • Lightweight (1–1.5 kg / 2.2–3.3 lbs): The sweet spot for most three-season backpackers. Good weather protection with manageable weight.
